Mama Instinct

With calving season in full force, there are lots of cute calves running around the RAB. I was riding along with Jeff and got a real picture of a mama's instinct. Jeff got out of the pickup to weigh a calf that had just been born, he advised me to stay in the pickup because he wasn't sure how the mama cow was going to take it. I watched with wide eyes as a stand off between Jeff and the cow took place. The cow with great hesitation let Jeff do what he needed to do. Watching this amazed me, not 2 hours earlier the heifer only worried about herself. She did what she wanted to do, when she wanted to do it. When the feed truck arrived she pushed her way to the front to get the fresh feed, and now without really knowing how she got to this point she is keeping up with a little rugrat.
This is so fascinating to me. The second the "baby" is born an unconditional love and protection is birthed that is not only an emotion or moral responsibility but a natural instinct. Thinking back on my own childhood being a "little calf" I can remember the sense of protection and love that I felt from my mother. Though I had it from my dad as well, the mother instinct is different and hard to explain. It was so..natural and nurturing.

In my opinion a very cool lady, Sarah Palin, frequently talks about the mama grizzly. She says,
"I love watching these mama bears. What I see in that is what a mom would do too – anything and everything, laying down her life for her kids."

I have been witnessing what she is talking about, and  though I haven't experienced this yet one day I will : )
